Spotlight Update
March 25, 2010
Education PreK-12
Representative Clarke-Reed enjoying theWilton Manors Kiwanis Kid’s Day
Three weeks into this year’s session we have a better picture of the budget for education. A list of issues follows:
- Class size Amendment
- Property tax vs. increased enrollment ($31.00 per student cut)
- Reductions in lottery sales
- Not funding adequately Pre-K ($58 million reduction)
- Changing the student to teacher ratio in UPK
Again I have submitted my bill for transferring dollars from the Powerball Lottery to help with funding UPK (Universal Pre K).
Health Care/Family
(Democratic Ranking Member in the Health & Family Services Policy Council)
Health care reductions to health care providers.
- Our Healthy Start cuts equal 4.7 million. With pregnancy on the rise, cutting health care clinics is not a good idea. The cuts were aimed at the Deerfield Beach Health Clinic at Deerfield Beach High School. Fortunately, we have been able to get dollars returned to the clinic budget in the House of Representatives.
Trust Funds
- This year there are still sweeps from Trust funds to balance the budget in the amount of $716,846,930. The Lawton Chiles Fund swept up to $600 million dollars.
Roads, Bridges and Ports
Representative Clarke-Reed speaking at the Roads, Bridges and Ports Committee
- Most bills in this committee have been about repealing laws that have been on the books for years and never enforced. They included task forces and boards.
- One bill which is important is the “texting bill”. Lots of discussion about this proposed bill. As this bill moves through committees, it might get some amendments.
- The need for Harbor Pilots regulatory and rate setting boards that oversea this industry needs to be appointed.
Local Bills
- The Broward Delegation passed a number of local bills. Some bills are about annexation, establishing the Office of Inspector General and bill on local fire districts.
Census 2010 Is Here

- Did you get a census form in the mail? Remember our Federal dollars come to our cities and state based on the population. You must BE COUNTED. No other agency gets this information.
